Vietnam is one of the most popular destinations In South East Asia, coming a close second to the perennial backpacker favorite, Thailand. It is the less touristy, less crowded version of Thailand but just as amazing in terms of culture, food, and history.

To enter Vietnam, you will need to apply for a visa. However, there are multiple types of visas. The type of visa you need depends on your purpose of visit. In this blog, we'll go through some of the common types of Vietnam visas.

Different types of Vietnam Visa

Tourist visa (DL)

The most common type of Vietnam visa is the tourist visa (DL). With this type of visa, you can visit Vietnam as a tourist and enjoy the finest of what the country has to offer. However, if you apply for a tourist visa, you will not be allowed to work or invest in any business or organization in Vietnam. The visa is valid from a month up to 3 months which can be further extended to 1 year for US citizens only. You can apply for a tourist visa either through visa-on-arrival or by e-visa.

 Business Visa (DN)

A Vietnam business visa allows you to work, invest, and do other business-related activities in Vietnam on a short-term basis. This visa is valid for a total of 12 months. There are two types of Vietnam Business Visa: DN1 and DN2. The DN1 Business visa is granted to foreigners to work with enterprises and organizations that are based in Vietnam according to Vietnamese laws. While the DN2 business visa is granted to foreigners who come to Vietnam to offer their services, build up a business presence, or perform business activities under international deals of which Vietnam is a part.

Student or Internship Visa (DH)

Vietnam student or internship visa is issued to individuals who are studying or would like to study at an undergraduate or graduate course or are going to do an internship in Vietnam. In order to be eligible to apply for a DH visa, you need to be either enrolled or have been recently accepted into a university or organization in Vietnam.

Investor Visa (DT)

Vietnam Investor Visa (DT) is a type of visa issued to foreign investors, representatives of foreign companies who are interested in investing in Vietnam-based companies. It has a validity of 12 months which can be extended to 5 years. Currently, there are 4 types of Vietnam Investor Visa: DT1 which is granted to investors investing 100 billion VND in Vietnam, the DT2 which is granted to investors investing under 100 billion VND in Vietnam, the DT3 which is for investors investing under 50 billion VNDin Vietnam and lastly, DT4 which is for investors investing less than 3 billion VND in Vietnam.

Dependent Visa (TT)

Vietnam Dependent Visa (TT) is a type of visa that allows the dependent (children, spouse, and parents) of an individual who resides or works in Vietnam to enter Vietnam. They will have to be sponsored by a family member who is either a Vietnamese citizen or a foreigner who has been issued a Vietnamese visa or has a temporary residence card. The visa is valid for a total of 12 months and up to 3 years.

Transit Visa

Transit visas are a type of visa given to people who are traveling between countries with a transit stop in one country. As long as the time between your connecting flights in Vietnam is less than 24 hours you won't be required to have transit. However, Vietnam requires an individual whose transit lasts more than 24 hours to apply for a Vietnam transit visa.
