The history of Cam Ranh Airport dates back to the war era, when it served as a strategic airbase for the US military from 1965 to 1972. After 1975, it was taken over and utilised for military purposes by the Vietnam People's Army.
It wasn’t until 2004 that the airport was officially converted for civilian use and began operating commercial flights. This marked a major milestone in Khanh Hoa Province’s socio-economic development strategy.
From 2007 onwards, the airport underwent continuous upgrades and expansions. A significant highlight was the construction of the international terminal T2 a modern architectural project inspired by the shape of a bird’s nest, symbolising Khanh Hoa’s renowned swiftlet nests. Terminal T2 was inaugurated in June 2018, raising the airport’s total capacity to over 12 million passengers annually.
Today, Cam Ranh International Airport is being developed into a regional air transit hub, with the capacity to compete with major international airports in Southeast Asia.
