Exploring the Architecture of Ho QuocPagoda

A Tribute to LyTran Dynasty Architecture

Ho QuocPagoda proudly reflects the architectural essence of the Ly Tran dynasties, a signature style of Vietnamese Buddhism. The entire pagoda is constructed from ironwood, creating a majestic yet harmonious connection with nature. The intricately carved details, gracefully curved roof tiles, and robust pillars evoke the grandeur of ancient pagodas from the 11th to 13th centuries.

Upon entering the temple grounds, visitors will be struck by the imposing Tam Quan Gate, solemn Buddha statues, and artistic motifs that embody the Buddhist cultural heritage of its golden era. The seamless fusion of the spectacular natural surroundings and the ancient spiritual architecture establishes an atmosphere of serenity, allowing visitors to experience inner peace and tranquillity.

A Unique and Diverse Spiritual Complex

Tam Quan Gate The Entrance to the Buddhist Realm

To step into the sacred space of Ho QuocPagoda, visitors must pass through the majestic Tam Quan Gate, which consists of three entrances, each holding deep Buddhist significance:

  • The central gate Đia Giac (Earthly Enlightenment): Symbolising the path to enlightenment.
  • The left gate Bat Nhi (Eightfold Path & Duality): Representing liberation from worldly attachments.
  • The right gate Giai Thoat (Ultimate Liberation): Leading to complete spiritual freedom and peace.

Thiên Tỉnh Courtyard A Haven of Serenity

Beyond the entrance lies Thiên Tỉnh Courtyard, a spacious and verdant area that exudes a sense of peace and relaxation. The highlight of the courtyard is a nearly 3-metre-high jade Buddha statue, masterfully carved from rare marble. Every detail of the statue is meticulously crafted, reflecting the Buddha’s graceful and dignified presence.

The Main Hall  The Heart of Spiritual Devotion

From the jade Buddha statue, visitors must ascend 70 intricately carved stone steps, adorned with four dragon sculptures, to reach the Main Hall the most sacred area of the pagoda. The staircase design reflects the architectural legacy of the Trần Dynasty, emphasising the pagoda’s grandeur and spiritual significance.

Inside the Main Hall, 18 meticulously sculpted Arhat statues stand in a row, each displaying a distinct posture and expression, symbolising profound Buddhist teachings. Additionally, the hall features exquisite bas-reliefs illustrating significant historical events, creating an awe-inspiring space that blends spirituality with artistic heritage.

To Hall  Honouring the Buddhist Masters

If you are wondering whom Ho QuocPagoda is dedicated to, the Tổ Hall provides the answer. This sacred space venerates the Three Patriarchs of the Trúc Lâm Zen Sect:

  • Emperor Tran Nhan Tong The king who renounced his throne to pursue a monastic life and founded the Trúc Lâm Zen School.
  • Zen Master Pháp Loa His successor, who further developed Trúc Lâm Buddhism.
  • Zen Master Huyen Quang One of the three revered patriarchs who significantly contributed to the spread of Buddhism.
