Cho Lon, Ho Chi Minh City’s very own Chinatown, is a place you need to visit while in Vietnam. Having been established around the 1770s, it is the oldest Chinatown in Vietnam and is also considered one of the largest Chinatowns in the world. Located on the banks of the Saigon river, the neighborhood is great for exploring on foot. Atmospheric temples, lively markets, and colorful architecture are just some of the many things to experience in Cho Lon.
Hao Sy Phuong alley is one of the most famous and iconic streets in Cho Lon. Located in the heart of Cho Lon, Hao Sy Phuong alley is over 100 years old and one of the best places to explore on foot. There are also a large group of Chinese immigrants who call this alley their home. Walking around the alley you get to see the colorful architecture with its mix of traditional Chinese and Vietnamese styles.
Cho Lon is famous for its numerous pagodas, the most famous two being the Thien Hau Pagoda and Quan Am Pagoda. Thien Hau Pagoda is one of the oldest pagodas in Cho Lon having been built around the 1760s. While Quan Am Pagoda was built in the early 1800s. Both temples are colorful and extremely ornate with various carved figurines related to Chinese myths covering the roofs and walls. Other temples you can check out are the Tam Son Hoi Quan Pagoda, Ong Bon Pagoda, etc.
The Chinese are famous for their delicious food. So when in Cho Lon do as the locals would do and try out the delicious local cuisine. The food here is a mix of Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine and is unlike anything you’ll ever come across. You can find streets lined with street stalls selling various foods. There are also small restaurants and cafes located all across the bustling neighborhood. Some of the best food to try here are dim sums, hu tieu ca or fish noodle soup, and chao tieu or teochew porridge.
Binh Tay Market is one of the go-to markets for the locals in Cho Lon. The market was built in the 1880s by the French and has been a popular spot ever since. Here you’ll find an extensive ranch of local produce from fruits and vegetables to poultry and seafood. You can also find unique handmade handicrafts. The market is also quite popular for its extensive breakfast menu with various stalls selling pho, spring rolls, and other tasty treats.

Cho Lon is located on the West bank of the Saigon River and encompasses District 5 and District 6. You can travel there either by taxi or bus. Though most locals take the bus. If you want to take the bus, Bus No. 1 and Bus No. 56 go directly to the Cholon Bus Station.
