The museum covers an area of 3.27 hectares, consisting of two main areas: indoor and outdoor exhibition areas. The indoor exhibition area includes two large buildings, the Bronze Drum and the Kite buildings, along with other functional rooms. History and construction process of Vietnam Museum of Ethnology

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is a place to introduce and protect the cultural beauty of ethnic groups in the country and abroad. The museum was built on a large plot of land in the west of Hanoi, with the contribution of the French government, after being approved by the Vietnamese government in 1987. The museum was designed by architect Ha Duc Linh, a Tay person, with the idea of taking the bronze drum as a symbol. The interior was designed by architect Veronique Dollfus, a French person, with a harmonious combination of traditional and modern elements.

The museum was inaugurated on November 12, 1997, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. The museum has been operating and developing for more than 20 years, becoming one of the leading museums in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

The museum has a rich and diverse collection of ethnic culture, including about 30,000 artifacts, 42,000 photos, 237 videos and 373 audio tapes. The Kite Building is a subsidiary building of the Museum, with an area of 1,320 m2. The building has an architecture inspired by the kite - a traditional toy culture of ethnic groups in Vietnam. The building has only one exhibition floor.

The exhibition floor of the Kite Building is where thematic and temporary exhibitions on ethnic groups in and outside the country take place. The exhibitions are often changed according to different topics, such as: culinary culture, folk culture, religious culture, costume culture, jewelry culture, children’s toy culture… The exhibitions not only introduce artifacts but also have interactive, experiential and performance activities for visitors.

The Garden of Architecture is an outdoor exhibition area of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, with an area of 20,000 m2. The Garden of Architecture reproduces houses, villages, worship structures and gardens of ethnic groups. Currently, the Garden of Architecture has 10 houses of ethnic groups: Ede, Gia Rai, Tay, Dao, Thai, Muong, Ede, Cham, Kho Mu and Cong.
