Have you ever dreamed of staying in a fairytale house? You can do so in Vietnam. Located on a nondescript street in Dalat is Hang Nga Guest House or popularly known as Hang Nga Crazy House, one of Vietnam’s weirdest hotels.

Designed by architect Dang Viet Nga, the hotel looks straight out of a fairytale book with a design that looks more like an art piece rather than a house. From the moment you step foot into the house, you will be transported to a faraway fantasy world.

History of Hang Nga Crazy House

Hang Nga Crazy House was the brainchild of Vietnamese architect Dang Viet Nga. She studied in Moscow and was there till she finished her doctoral in 1972. She then came back to Hanoi and started working for the government as an architect.

In 1983, she was transferred to Dalat. The city’s beautiful landscape, climate, and friendly locals inspired her to stay. It was here in Dalat that she was inspired to create a house that resembled what she was seeing before her.

After designing several projects for the government, Dang felt like she had to use her creativity and imagination to design something magical. She wanted a house that was “the culmination of her life and creativity”.

She wanted to break free from traditional architectural practices. So instead of using a blueprint, she painted her ideas onto canvas. She then hired local craftsmen to build her dream house.

Architecture of Hang Nga Crazy House

Construction for the soon-to-be Crazy House began in 1990, and like the ever-evolving and growing nature around us, the building continues to grow with new additions. Her surreal design has drawn comparisons to famed artists like Salvador Dali, architect Anthony Gaudi, and even Walt Disney.

The house has very few right angles with the majority of the house resembling various organic life forms like mushrooms, shells, caves, etc. It was something that Dang was very adamant about. She wanted the house to mirror nature in all its beauty and weirdness.

The exterior of Hang Nga Crazy House was made to resemble a banyan tree with its “roots” extending out across and engulfing the entire property. The unevenly shaped windows, endless spiral staircases, bridges, and winding paths add to the air of fantasy around the whole house.
