According to historical documents, Turtle Lake was once the location of Khảm Khuyết Gate of the Bat Quai Citadel, later renamed Vọng Khuyết by King Minh Mang. In 1837, the Bat Quai Citadel was demolished and replaced with a smaller fortress called Phung.
When the French took over, they leveled this area, renamed it Gia Dinh, and restructured the entire city. In 1878, the French built a water tower here to supply local residents, but this tower was dismantled in 1921.
The site then became an intersection, known as Freedom Fighters Square. After the French left Vietnam, Turtle Lake was designed by architect Nguyen Ky. The exact construction date is unclear, with some sources stating 1965 and others suggesting 1967.
The name “Turtle Lake” originates from the lake’s unique design, which includes a roundabout about 100 meters in diameter, adorned with greenery and an octagonal fountain. Surrounding it are four spiral walkways leading to a monument featuring a bronze turtle carrying a large stone tablet.
