Exploring The Sand Dunes of Mui Ne, Vietnam

Who would imagine Vietnam, a southeast Asian country famous for its rice fields, mountains, and tropical forests would be home to sand dunes? Yes, you heard that right! Sand dunes!

How to reach

To reach the Sand Dunes of Mui Ne, you will need to hop on a bus ride from Ho Chi Minh city. It will take you approximately 5 to 6 hours to reach Mui Ne from Ho Chi Minh.

From Mui Ne, you can book a tour of the dunes. These tours usually take place either in the morning or evening. We recommend the morning tour since it's cooler and there are fewer people. The evening tours are great if you want to catch the sunset from the dunes but it is more crowded.

If you’re feeling adventurous you can rent motorbikes from Mui Ne city and go out into the dunes instead of going on a tour. But be warned, there have been reports of bikers getting stuck in the sand dunes and losing their way.

The Red Sand Dunes

The Red Sand Dunes are so-called because of the orange-brown sand that is reminiscent of the Gobi desert. It is easier to reach the red dunes which are located within 17 km of Mui Ne city center than the white dunes. Though not as popular as the white sand dunes, it is still a remarkable sight and is usually the first stop during the Mui Ne sand dune tour.

Once you are in the red sand dunes, an activity you should definitely not pass up on is sandboarding. All around the sand dunes are Vietnamese ladies carrying sandboards and offering tourists a chance of a lifetime to slide down the sand dunes.

The White Sand Dunes

The White Sand dunes are a stunning stretch of off-white sand that extends across the horizon. Located around 27 km north of Mui Ne city, the white sand dune is much larger than the red dunes and is also more popular among tourists.

One of the best things to do in the white sand dunes is to watch either the sunset or the sunrise. The marvelous sight is a great opportunity to capture that perfect photo. Another must-do activity in the dunes is to ride an ATV across the sandy terrain. You can rent the ATVs from the tour groups.

Fairy stream

Once you reach the end of your sand dune tour, head to the aptly named Fairy Stream. It is a stunning brook flowing through an even more colorful canyon. You can walk in the stream and feel the cool water on your feet. Admire the scenic rock formations all around you as you walk down the stream.
