Hoi An is not just famous for its pretty buildings and quaint alleyways. The charming town is also home to some of the best food in Vietnam. Everywhere you go in the town you’ll find stalls, restaurants, and cafes selling a wide variety of delicious local cuisine. With that said, let’s take a look at some classic Hoi An dishes you need to try.

Top Hoi An dishes

Cao Lau

Cau Lau is a noodle dish that you can find in almost every street in Hoi An but is rarely found outside the town. This delicious dish was said to have included rice noodles that were made using water from the historic Ba Le well. Nowadays, making the noodles from the well is not a requirement but the noodles must be soaked in tree ash and lye-rich water to achieve their signature thick bouncy texture. The dish comes with toppings of crispy pork, green leafy vegetables, herb, and bean sprouts.

Com Ga

Com Ga or more popularly known as chicken rice is a popular dish in a lot of Asian countries. In Vietnam, Hoi An is where you go if you want good com ga. The dish like the name suggests is made from sticky rice and chicken. The rice is boiled in chicken broth and turmeric to give it its distinctive yellow color. The chicken is boiled and then shredded into small pieces and served alongside pickled onions, coriander, chilies, and green veggies.

Banh Bao Banh Vac or white rose dumpling is a Hoi An specialty you can’t find anywhere else in Vietnam. The delicate translucent white dumpling wrapper is made from rice mixed with lye water. It is then stuffed with either minced pork or shrimp and topped with fried garlic. The dumplings are usually served with a sweet dipping sauce which elevates the dish and makes it feel like a party in your mouth.

Mango Cake

Mango cake is a popular sweet dessert that is quite unlike its name. It's neither a cake nor made from mango and the name actually comes from its shape which resembles a mango. The sweet is actually made from sticky rice and stuffed with crushed peanuts and brown sugar. It is a favorite among children and adults alike and can be found on every street corner.
