The historical site of Bach Dang River in Hai Phong is closely associated with three naval battles. These battles represent the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people:

In 938 AD, Ngo Quyen defeated the Southern Han army, ending a thousand years of domination from the north. In 981 AD, King Le Hoan triumphed over the Song dynasty's forces. In 1288 AD, General Tran Hung Dao led the naval battle on Bach Dang River against the Yuan-Mongol army.
