All You Need to Know About Vietnam Exit Visa

Generally, the visas we talk about are entry visas, a visa that allows an individual to enter a country. However, there’s another type of visa that barely gets mentioned and is quite useful in a few special cases, the exit visa, which allows an individual to exit the country. In this blog, we’ll talk about what exactly is a Vietnam Exit Visa and how you can apply for it in case you fall into the categories that require an exit visa.

About Vietnam Exit Visa

What is the Vietnam Exit Visa?

A Vietnam exit visa is a type of visa that allows an individual to leave the country. The exit visa is applicable only for individuals who have lost or damaged their passports, individuals with expired visas, and babies with foreign passports born in Vietnam. It is valid for a total of 15 days.

How to get a Vietnam Exit Visa?

In order to apply for a Vietnam Exit Visa you need to fall into one of three categories already mentioned above- individuals who have lost or damaged their passport, individuals with expired visas, and babies with foreign passports born in Vietnam. These three categories each have their process to get an exit visa.

For individuals with lost or damaged passports

One of the most common examples of people needing an exit visa is because of a lost or damaged passport. You will need the following documents to apply for a Vietnam exit visa- an original copy of the police report, a temporary passport issued by your embassy/consulate, form NA5, and a copy of your old passport if you have it.

  • The first step is to go to the nearest police station and file a report. After you have filed a report, you will be given a police report which will be used to start your exit visa process.
  • After this, you will have to go to your country’s embassy or consulate and get a temporary passport. If your country does not have an embassy or consulate, then you can contact the nearest Embassy in another country and ask for a diplomatic note.
  • The next step is then to go to the nearest Vietnam Immigration Office and apply for an exit visa. You will also need to pay a visa fee.
  • After completing all formalities you will receive your exit visa within a week or two.

For individuals with expired visas

To leave Vietnam legally after your visa has expired, you will need to apply for an exit visa. Staying in Vietnam with an expired visa is illegal and will result in an overstay fine of around 500,000 VND to 40,000,000, VND depending on the number of days of overstaying.

In order to apply, you will need the baby’s birth certificate, form NA5, delivery verification certificate issued by the hospital, parent’s passports, or visas.
