A Guide to Weather in Vietnam

Vietnam, though it does not look like it on maps, is actually a big country. Its size and location mean the weather in Vietnam varies widely from region to region. The country typically enjoys a mild tropical or subtropical climate with plenty of rain and sun at all times of the year. But that is not all, the weather in Vietnam can get quite unpredictable. One day you could be in the sweltering heat of Ho Chi Minh and the next day in the cool hills of Sapa. With that said, let’s take a look at what the average weather in Vietnam is like depending on the region.

Weather in Vietnam

North Vietnam

North Vietnam experiences the four distinct seasons we are familiar with- Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

The summer months of May to August are hot and humid with temperatures reaching up to 38 degrees. It is also during this time the region gets its highest rainfall.

Autumn in North Vietnam starts from September and lasts till early November. It is generally considered the best month to visit. The weather during these few months is dry and pleasant with temperatures hovering at around 27 degrees on average.

The winter season in North Vietnam starts from November and lasts till early February. It gets cold and chilly with temperatures going down to 10 degrees. The mountain areas get even colder with temperatures going down to 0 degrees with light snow. After winter comes the spring season which lasts from March to April. It is generally pleasant with light rain.

Central Vietnam

Central Vietnam experiences warm weather throughout the year with two very distinct seasons- the dry season and the wet season. The dry months start in February and last till August. The weather during these months is dry and hot with temperatures generally reaching 30+ degrees. The wet season from September to February experiences extremely heavy rainfall. The extreme weather in Central Vietnam can cause the occasional typhoons around the coastline and flooding especially in Hoi An.

South Vietnam

Like Central Vietnam, South Vietnam also experiences two distinct seasons- the dry season and the wet season. However, unlike the other regions where there are breaks from the hot season with a bit of a colder period, the weather here is usually hot and humid throughout the year.

The dry season in South Vietnam starts from November till April. The temperatures usually hover between 30 to 32 degrees and sometimes can even reach 40+ degrees. The wet season is from May to October with June to August receiving the heaviest rainfall.

In the far south, on the islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao, there is plenty of sunshine throughout the year with occasional rain during the wet season.
